Landscaping Company in Fort Wright, KY
Fort Wright’s terrain is the steepest and most dramatic of any residential community in the Kenton County corridor. The city occupies a series of ridges and valleys carved by Banklick Creek and its tributaries, creating elevation changes that are visible from every street. Roads wind along hillside contours rather than following grids, and properties routinely slope from front to back — or side to side — by ten feet or more. This isn’t terrain where you can install a patio on a flat pad and call it done. Every hardscape element, every planting bed, and every drainage solution has to account for the grade.
Fort Wright’s neighborhoods each present different conditions, but the constant is slope. In the older sections along Highland Pike and the former Lookout Heights and South Hills areas, mid-century homes sit on lots where the original landscaping was minimal — a few foundation shrubs, a lawn that follows the natural grade, and maybe a concrete walkway. Sixty or seventy years later, those shrubs are overgrown, the trees have matured into full canopy, and the yards have settled into patterns of erosion and drainage that the original builders never addressed. Our renovation designs for these properties typically involve regrading to redirect water, building retaining walls that create level terraces for patios and plantings, replacing overgrown foundation material with properly scaled designs, and adding hardscape features that turn unusable slopes into functional outdoor living space. For Fort Wright’s newer and larger homes — including the upscale Villages of Kyles Lane development — we design comprehensive landscapes from the ground up: stone terraces, outdoor kitchens, fire features, pergolas, swimming pools, and plantings that anchor the home into the hillside rather than sitting on top of it.
Lawn Sprinkler Systems
Fort Wright’s steep terrain makes irrigation both more necessary and more difficult to execute properly. South-facing slopes dry out rapidly in summer while shaded north-facing grades hold moisture far longer. Water runs off steep grades before it can penetrate, pooling at the base of slopes and leaving upper zones dry. Gravity creates pressure differentials that cause heads at lower elevations to overperform while uphill zones are underserved. We design irrigation systems specifically for this topography — with check valves and pressure regulation to equalize performance across elevation changes, drip irrigation in shaded beds and steep slopes where spray would cause runoff, and zone-specific scheduling that accounts for the sun, shade, and soil conditions across every section of the property. Smart controllers with rain sensors ensure efficient operation through Kentucky’s unpredictable summer weather.
Landscape Lighting — Fort Wright’s hilly terrain and mature tree canopy make landscape lighting a practical necessity as much as an aesthetic upgrade. Grade changes between the street and the front door, uneven transitions between terraced levels, and steps built into slopes all create trip hazards after dark. Well-designed path lighting along walkways, driveways, and stairways addresses safety first. Beyond that, Fort Wright’s mature oaks, maples, and beeches offer dramatic uplighting opportunities that take advantage of the vertical dimension these hillside lots naturally provide. Accent lighting on stone retaining walls, architectural features, and outdoor living areas completes the picture — creating properties that look as inviting at night as they do during the day. Our LED systems are built for Northern Kentucky’s freeze-thaw cycles and designed to work with the natural contours of Fort Wright’s terrain.

Fort Wright is a quiet, well-established community of nearly 6,000 residents set into the hilly terrain of northern Kenton County — five minutes from downtown Cincinnati via I-75 and a world apart in feel. Named for the Civil War earthwork fortification that Union troops built here in September 1862 to defend Cincinnati from advancing Confederate armies, the city was incorporated in 1941 and grew through a series of annexations that brought the neighboring communities of Lookout Heights, South Hills, and Lakeview into one cohesive city. The result is a residential community defined by winding streets that follow the contour of its ridges and hollows, a housing stock that ranges from compact 1950s brick ranches to spacious hillside homes on half-acre lots, and a proximity to 700-acre Devou Park that gives residents access to golf, hiking, and some of the best skyline views in the Tri-State.
Tepe Landscape & Design Group has served Fort Wright homeowners since 1980. We understand the conditions that define landscaping in this community: steep grades that demand retaining walls and proper drainage engineering, mature hardwoods that create dense shade on north-facing slopes, and the expectations of homeowners who’ve chosen Fort Wright for its established character and location. Whether you’re renovating the landscape on a mid-century home along Highland Pike, designing an outdoor living space for a property in the Villages of Kyles Lane, or building a patio and fire feature on a lot that backs up to the wooded hillsides near Devou Park, we bring four decades of Tri-State design/build experience to every project.
