Madeira’s History
Madeira’s story starts with the railroad. The area was settled as early as 1787, when Daniel Bates arrived in what was then part of the Northwest Territory. By the early 1800s, families like the Hosbrooks, DeMars, Jones, and Kitchells had purchased land in what would become Columbia Township — farming a rolling landscape of hardwood ridges and creek valleys northeast of Cincinnati. The community stayed rural and small until 1866, when the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad completed its line through the area. The local stop was named for John Madeira, a landowner and treasurer of the railroad, and Madeira was on its way. The community was largely laid out by 1871, incorporated as a village in 1910, and achieved city status in 1959. The 1970 annexation of South Kenwood nearly doubled Madeira’s footprint to its current 3.38 square miles.
