Structural & Decorative Walls for Sloped Cincinnati Properties

Cincinnati is built on hills. The city maintains nearly 50 miles of its own retaining walls — a number that tells you everything about the terrain homeowners deal with across the Tri-State region. From the steep grades in Columbia Tusculum and Mount Adams to the rolling hillsides of Indian Hill and the Northern Kentucky river communities, slopes are part of life here. And slopes create problems: soil erosion, drainage headaches, unusable yard space, and landscape features that slowly migrate downhill after every heavy rain.

A properly designed and built retaining wall solves those problems. It holds the earth in place, creates level areas where there were none, manages stormwater runoff, and turns the most challenging part of your property into one of its best features.

At Tepe Landscape & Design Group, we’ve been designing and constructing retaining walls across Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and Eastern Indiana since 1980. Our in-house masons don’t just stack stone — they engineer structural solutions that account for soil composition, hydrostatic pressure, drainage patterns, and freeze-thaw cycling. And because we’re a full-service design-build firm, your retaining wall is always part of a coordinated plan that includes the patio, landscaping, lighting, irrigation, and grading around it.

Award-Winning Craftsmanship Since 1980

Tepe Landscape & Design Group has earned Home & Garden Show “Best in Show” recognition, along with multiple Houzz awards for design excellence. Our Houzz profile features projects with Indiana gray limestone retaining walls, elaborate stone step pathways, and structural walls integrated with pools, patios, and outdoor living spaces.

Brothers Mark and Gregg Tepe founded this company over four decades ago on a commitment to quality craftsmanship and personal service. That commitment extends to every retaining wall we build — whether it’s a small garden wall defining a planting bed or a major structural installation supporting a complete backyard transformation.

The hilly terrain common to many of these communities is exactly why retaining walls are among our most frequently requested services. Properties that seem unusable or problematic because of slope often turn out to have the most potential once the grade is properly managed. Some of our most impressive outdoor living projects started with a retaining wall that nobody else wanted to build.

Types of Retaining Walls We Build

Every retaining wall project starts with the site. Soil type, slope angle, wall height, drainage conditions, proximity to structures, and the intended use.

  • Natural stone retaining walls Using Indiana limestone, fieldstone, and regionally sourced natural stone, our masons build walls that look like they belong in the landscape.
  • Manufactured block walls (Allen Block) Block walls are an excellent choice for taller walls, terraced configurations, and applications where a clean, uniform appearance is desired.
  • Boulder walls These walls blend naturally into wooded and rustic landscapes and work well for moderate grade changes where a more organic appearance is the goal.
  • Combination walls Integrate natural stone, block, and other materials within a single project.

Materials Built for the Tri-State Climate

We select materials based on performance in this specific environment. Natural Indiana limestone has been used in Cincinnati construction for generations because it handles moisture and temperature cycling exceptionally well.

The manufactured block systems we specify are rated for severe weathering exposure. And the aggregate, filter fabric, and drain tile we use behind every wall are selected for long-term drainage performance, not just the cheapest option from the supply yard.

Our masons know these materials intimately because they’ve been working with them in this region for years.
